The seal is the point. An airtight lid keeps the contents fresh and keeps the smell where it belongs, which a friction-fit plastic pot does not manage for long.
Alloy is the other half of it. A metal pot does not crack when it is crushed at the bottom of a bag and the threads do not strip after a few dozen openings, which is where cheap plastic containers fail.
