Hand rolled cigars, made individually with long-filler tobacco – whole leaves running the length of the cigar rather than cut filler.

That’s what you’re paying for: a slower, more even burn, and more character. It also means more variation between one cigar and the next, which is part of the appeal.

Most of ours are Nicaraguan or Dominican, and most are sold as singles so you can try one before committing to more.

Choosing one

• New to hand rolled? Start mild and short. Something around 2 out of 5 for strength in a corona or petit corona size.
• Strength – we list it on every product, 1 to 5. It’s the single most useful number if you don’t know the brand.
• Size matters more than you’d think – a wider ring gauge burns cooler and slower. A 4 x 60 and a 5 x 30 are very different smokes even with the same tobacco in them.
• The wrapper does most of the flavour work. A maduro wrapper is darker and sweeter; a Connecticut is paler and milder. Same filler underneath can taste quite different.

After something cheaper for everyday? Machine made cigars are the other half of the shelf.

Common questions

Can I buy just one?
Yes. Most are sold as single cigars, which is the sensible way to find out what you like.

How long does one take?
Depends on the size. A petit corona is twenty to forty minutes; a bigger ring gauge will take an hour or more.

How do I keep them?
In a sealed box or tin with a two-way humidity pack. Dry cigars crack and burn hot, damp ones won’t draw.

Do I need a cutter?
Yes, and a clean cut makes a real difference to how the cigar draws. Biting the end tears the wrapper and it smokes badly from then on.
