Boveda make two-way humidity control packs — the small sachets that sit inside a humidor, a travel case or a sealed container and hold the air at a set humidity. The two-way method is their own — they hold the patents on it.

The method is a saturated salt solution sealed inside a membrane that water vapour can pass through but the solution cannot. When the air inside the container is too dry the pack gives up vapour; when it is too damp it takes vapour back. A saturated salt solution settles at one known humidity and stays there, which is why the same principle is used to calibrate hygrometers. Boveda hold theirs to within about 2% RH, and make packs across a range from 32% to 83% RH.

The company is American, based in Minnetonka, Minnesota. It started in 1997 as Humidipak and took the Boveda name in 2012. The technology is used well beyond tobacco — instrument makers, food producers and museums all use it for the same reason.

We stock three sizes, all 62% RH: Size 1, Size 3 and Size 8.
